Candle Making Class

Join us for our first event collaboration with Lori Jamison, founder of Heaven Scent Collective. Jamison will be leading a 120 min Candle Making Class at the bookstore to celebrate our 3 years of business.

Each guest will have the opportunity to create a custom scent combination of their choosing with an option to create a custom bath salt, as well. Guests will be able to take their crafted scents with them same-day.

The class is open to guests ages 12+. For guests between 12-15 years old, guest will be required to have a supervisor with them.

Storyteller Workshop: The Art of Spoken Word + Performance

Workshop Details:

The Storyteller Workshop series aims to foster a vibrant and inclusive writing community within the community bookstore. This series will provide aspiring writers with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration to explore and develop their craft in various genres, including creative fiction, poetry, non-fiction, memoirs, spoken word, and children's literature.

Workshop 001/006 is called The Art of Spoken Word + Performance. This workshop focuses on spoken word and poetry performance. Participants will learn the art of crafting spoken word pieces, explore performance techniques, and have the opportunity to showcase their work in a supportive environment.

Spoken Word Night @ BNB will take place the following day on Sunday, April 14th @ 7pm

The Facilitators

Casha Gloria

A native of Wyandotte County, has emerged as a self-taught artist since 2015, traversing the vibrant realms of artistic expression. Deeply rooted in her poetic sensibilities, she finds inspiration in the alchemy of words, seamlessly weaving them into vivid tapestries of imagery. With a deft hand and an intuitive spirit, Casha Gloria infuses her creations with a kaleidoscope of bold hues and profound concepts, drawing from the rich palette of pop art and the resonant narratives of African American culture. Each stroke and composition serves as a testament to her commitment to delivering messages that resonate with depth and resonance.

Mz Angela Roux

Born and raised in South Kansas City, MO, Mz Angela Roux has always been a fan of language. Beginning with writing short stories at age eight, she did not find her poetic voice until her early twenties. She describes her poetry as “edu-tainment” combining witty perspectives on modern day womanhood with social commentary.

She was named “Best Spoken Word Act” in Pitch Magazine’s “Best of KC 2013” edition. She is the creator and producer of Estrogen Rush!, an all-female poetry show, which debuted in November 2012 and had it's 2nd show, Estrogen Rush! A Tribute to Maya Angelou ran in July 2014. She has featured at the 2010 and 2013 KC Fringe Festival and performed as some of KC's premiere poetry venues.

Glenn North

poet • activist • educator

Glenn A. North is an award-winning poet, activist, educator, and arts executive based in Kansas City.

He sits as the Poet Laureate of 18th and Vine St. He has previously served at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center, American Jazz Museum and The Black Archives of Kansas City / Mid-America.

Glenn earned his M.F.A. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. His thesis was entitled “Pro-Black Prosody." 

In addition to presenting poetry, Glenn also conducts workshops on Ekphrastic poetry, using poetry to address issues of social justice, and self-empowerment for disenfranchised students through reflective poetry.

KCK-native, Hill, is a Kansas City, Kansas native raised on the love of books, people, and travel. This collection of work is the first of many to come from the author.

About the Book:

Three short stories and seven poems make up the flowery bouquet that is Avalokita. Hopeful nomad, Riya Jones, presses onward as she grapples to understand friendships, suicide, and the ever-changing bio-engineering society she lives in. Landing in Kansas City, Kansas in the year 2052, the Science-Fiction arrangement of storytelling invites the reader to take a ride on the impulsive side.
